Your essay opening, with Maine as the subject, is strikingly descriptive of my home state. West Virginia also remains an example of an ageing, regressive, single-economy, zero-thought-for-the-future state.
Our Legislature — even when it is well intentioned (although often it is not) — practices only ‘knee-jerk’ legislation in its feeble attempt to stomp out the fires. And then we wonder why the young leave our state in droves…
The just-ended state-wide work stoppage by West Virginia teachers is a prime example. Any certified teacher in our state, can teach tomorrow in any surrounding state and net an instant annual pay raise of between $10,000 and $20,000.
Thank you for your thoughtful piece.
